PETALING JAYA, July 7 (Sin Chew Daily) -- Business owners owing GST will now join PTPTN, company and individual income tax defaulters in the list of people barred from leaving the country.

Customs Department director-general Datuk Subromaniam Tholasy told Sin Chew Daily the owners and directors of some 7,143 businesses in the country had already been blacklisted for defaulting on GST payment.

He said businesses had to submit to the Customs Department the GST they had collected from consumers.

He urged businessmen defaulting on GST payment to check from the Immigration Department website whether they had been blacklisted before traveling abroad.

"If they pay the GST in full, their names will be removed from the blacklist."

Meanwhile, Immigration Department director-general Datuk Seri Mustafar Ali said any individual defaulting on income tax or GST payment would be barred from leaving the country if requested by any government authority.

He told Sin Chew Daily, "Anyone owing the country's taxes, be it income tax, company tax or GST, will be barred from leaving the country if the relevant authorities request us to impose the restriction order on them.

"If the court rules that a person is barred from leaving the country, the Immigration Department will also abide by the order."

He said more than 700,000 Malaysians blacklisted by the authorities were barred from leaving the country as of November 2016.
