Salient points from Umno's presidential policy speech

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 10 (Bernama) -- Following are the salient points in the policy speech of Umno President Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak at the 2015 Umno General Assembly which among other things touched on his leadership, party solidarity, economic challenges as well as current and international issues.

The speech with the theme 'Umno: Perfecting A Struggle' was delivered before the 2,654 Umno delegates as well as invited guests at the 69th annual assembly at the Putra World Trade Centre here.

- Every Umno member is urged to be united in defending the party.

- Confident that the majority of the party members stand strongly behind his leadership.

- Umno is facing a difficult period which is testing the patience and steadfastness of the party leadership.

- Umno will continue to look after the well-being and welfare of the Malays and bumiputras

- Stressing that he cannot admit defeat, but in fact would courageously resolve the problems and continue to lead Umno.

- Principles of leadership not related to arrogance, to live in eternity and to gather people all over the place and make criticisms and accusations at will.

- "I am a gentleman, if there are problems, come and see me, discuss and resolve through the proper channel"

- Pointed out that he could not be a coward.

- Reminded on the importance of the principles of loyalty to the top leadership.

- "I am not confrontational... have never toppled anyone, what more to betray Umno".

- Najib admitted that he had chosen to be loyal to Dr Mahathir's leadership when the party was facing a leadership crisis in 1987

- The party constitution detailed the responsibilities of the deputy president, vice-presidents in assisting the president in discharging his responsibilities.

- War of perception through the social media is the biggest challenge for Umno.

- More than 90 per cent of the pledges made by the government in the 13th General Election had been successfully implemented.

- Umno reminded not to lose focus in ensuring that all the pledges made in the 13th General Election were fulfilled and implemented.

- "I certainly cannot surrender, in fact... resolve the problem courageously to continue to lead Umno".

- Criticised certain groups who were 'drilling holes' on the Umno vessel that could destroy the race.

- The debts of 1MDB are reduced to RM17 billion with the sale of Edra Energy, proving that the rationalisation plan was proceeding smoothly.

- Issue on 1MDB: Confident that he was on the right side, the truth would eventually emerge.

- The successes of IHH Healthcare Bhd and Mekah Metro, among the proofs of the successes of Malaysians achieved through the struggles of Umno.

- The absence of GST might push up the country's deficit to 4.8 per cent in the first year, much higher in the following year from 3.1 per cent now.

- Without the GST implementation, the government might be forced to take a loan to pay the salary of civil servants.

- The fall in the value of the national currency is due to external factors and not due to the failure of the government in managing the national economy.

- External factors not only affected Malaysia's economy, but they also had an impact on the national economy of most of the developing nations.

- The Bumiputra Agenda has been elevated and recognised in the international arena.

- Malaysia aims to be among the top 10 most competitive countries in the world by the year 2030.

- Malaysia will never be apologetic in defending the Bumiputra Agenda during the TPPA negotiations.

- TPPA members accept and recognise the Bumiputra Policy as the terms of the TPPA at the global level.

- The acceptance of the Bumiputra Policy in TPPA proves that not only the national agenda has succeeded but also the struggles of Umno too .

- In the interest of the party, Umno had to make a very difficult decision after getting the agreement of the Supreme Council.

- Criticised the action of a certain individual who was willing to meet with a party linked to the intrusion in Lahad Datu.

- The government will continue to ensure the security of Sabah.

- The government will never allow the creation of a two-party system in the country.

- The people only have two choices, accept the 'coalition' led by Umno or the one dominated by DAP .

- If Umno is rejected, Malaysia will be governed by the group that is against the struggles of Islam, and rejecting the struggles of the Malays and the bumiputras.

- Pledged to be fully committed to spreading and elevating the sanctity of Islam in Malaysia.

- In elevating the sanctity of Islam, Malaysia will not be cowed by any major power.

- The Umno leadership will continue to be steadfast in assisting the struggles of the Palestinian people.

- Calls on the three party wings to help him in driving Malaysia towards excellence.

- In craving for the solidarity of the ummah, Najib wants party members to strengthen Umno's internal solidarity first.
